Escaping to Amsterdam: A Weekend of Charm and Sunshine

 AD, Travel,

This summer, we decided to break from our usual Copenhagen routine and revisit one of our old favorites—Amsterdam. The city had left such an impression during our last visit, and this time we were eager to experience it through the warm, sunny lens of summer.

Amsterdam, a city known for its iconic canals, rich history, and vibrant culture, never fails to enchant. The energy in the air is contagious. From the moment we arrived, it was impossible not to get swept up in the city’s good vibes. People were out and about—smiling, chatting, and basking in the sunshine—creating a welcoming atmosphere everywhere we went.

On our previous trip, it was winter, and we had the rare opportunity to walk on the frozen canals—an experience we still talk about. But this time, it was all about slipping into flat shoes, a breezy summer dress, and exploring the city’s sunlit streets, markets, and cafés. Amsterdam’s charm changes with the seasons, and we were eager to experience its lively summer mood.

We landed early in the morning, refreshed and ready to dive into Amsterdam’s delights. Our first stop was the Pulitzer Hotel, an absolute gem that added a touch of luxury to our stay. Located in the heart of the Jordaan district, this stunning property is made up of 25 restored canal houses. It’s like stepping back in time while still enjoying modern comfort.

The Pulitzer has a fascinating history dating back to the 17th century, and its heritage is woven into every corner of the hotel. The eclectic interior design blends historic charm with contemporary elegance. Service is impeccable, and the location is perfect for exploring Amsterdam’s key attractions, with the Anne Frank House and The Nine Streets just a short walk away. We arrived just in time for breakfast, and the spread at the hotel’s restaurant didn’t disappoint. Fresh summer fruits, delicious pastries, and an excellent cup of coffee set the tone for the rest of the trip—a perfect start to our stay in this iconic city.

After breakfast, we couldn’t resist strolling around. We wandered down to the canals, where the reflections of the historic buildings shimmered on the water. Amsterdam is a walking city—no need for cars here. We grabbed some stroopwafels (the classic Dutch caramel-filled cookies), found a cozy bench, and simply watched the world go by. Boats of all shapes and sizes drifted past—some filled with tourists, others with locals enjoying a peaceful ride or a casual drink with friends. The atmosphere was laid-back, and we relished every moment of soaking in the sun, chatting, and watching life unfold on the water.

As evening approached, we were ready for a delicious dinner. We dined at Jansz, a fantastic restaurant located inside the Pulitzer, known for its seasonal and local dishes. The weather was perfect, so we sat outside in the courtyard, surrounded by greenery, enjoying the sounds of the city and the soft evening breeze.

We indulged in a glass of crisp wine and some mouthwatering dishes that showcased the best of Dutch and European cuisine. And of course, no meal would be complete without dessert. The Cornflakes Sundae was exceptional—light, playful, and the ideal way to end the night. It truly felt like a magical evening.

Whether it’s the canals, the historical architecture, or the eclectic mix of old and new, Amsterdam never ceases to surprise. In summer, it transforms into a vibrant hub where people gather to enjoy the sun, good food, and good company. We left with full hearts and a promise to return.
