CPHFW SS23: RÆBURN

James Cochrane

Zalando, Europe’s leading online fashion and lifestyle platform, and Copenhagen Fashion Week presented RÆBURN as one of the finalists for this season’s Zalando Sustainability Award at Copenhagen Fashion Week, on 9th August 2022. This is the fourth season of a three-year strategic partnership between Zalando and Copenhagen Fashion Week, with the award at its core. The award, which is open to international applicants, aims to encourage fashion brands to explore sustainable alternatives and recognize strategies that contribute to a more sustainable industry. It is such a great initiative, so I of course tried to attend all the shows from the finalists this season. The first one I went to was RÆBURN.

Established in 2009, by Christopher Ræburn, whose never-ending ‘archaeological’ discoveries led to the first full collection (AW10 PREPARE) using de-commissioned military stock to create limited edition outerwear for both men and women. From wool field jackets to nylon parachute canopies, the collections encompassed the brands RÆMADE style, meticulously deconstructing original artefacts and reworking the materials into unique and responsible garments.

The design ethos of Ræburn has been informed by 3 main principles, ‘Ræmade, Ræduced, and Ræcycled.’ From concept to completion, each collection, each garment has been meticulously graded against these values.

RÆBURNSS23 MACH 3.3 draws inspiration from the iconic SR-71 Blackbird, a strategic reconnaissance aircraft that still today boasts the world record it set 1976 as the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft. Study of this jet, coupled with research into its flight suits and supporting equipment, has helped to shape a collection that champions a futuristic military aesthetic. Striking looks marry with a wealth of utilitarian features, making this a collection that deftly straddles the intersect of form and function.
