First Stop: Scarabeo Camp

 AD, Travel,

Hey guys, how are you?

Let’s continue with posts about the Morocco trip? I decided to create chronological posts, so you can follow in our footsteps – try to catch us if you can! As a final post I will sum up on the trip and give some helpful tips for when you are visiting Morocco. Yesterday I shared a beautiful photoshoot from the inspiring Scarabeo camp and I have already received some questions about the camp, so I will answer them all and give some info about the place.

A scarabeo is an insect you can find in the Agafay desert and I actually saw MANY of them in the ruins of a cool old village, currently used to shooting movies, that we crossed by in the middle of the desert. I got very curious about the insect when we saw these big bugs in the desert because I’ve never seen anything like them. What I discovered when reading was that there are around 30,000 different kinds of Scarabeo in the world, and in the old Egypt they were sacred and used as amulets. And if you enjoy history of old civilizations, like me, you will probably remember that the Egyptians used these insects in the mummification process. Anyway, if you would like to see them, you need to go on adventures in the desert, because we didn’t see any at Scarabeo Camp, which was completely fine with us. hehe

Scarabeo is not a traditional camping experience, it is more GLAMPING [Glamour + Camping] because of the mix of rural surroundings with nice tents, delicious food and perfect service. I could really get used to glamping, hehe. Life is all about the moments were you feel alive by experiencing something new and exciting, which is why I was really looking forward to visiting the Agafay Desert, and I can assure you that all my expectations were exceeded in reality. The camp is so magical and it feels like you have landed in a parallel universe, without internet or electricity where you can just enjoy the nature, your thoughts and deep conversations. It’s absolutely amazing!

The Scarabeo Camp offers transportation to pick up from your hotel or riad and bring you to your next destination. From Marrakech the trip takes 45 minutes and it is a comfortable ride all the way in 4×4 cars. Upon arrival at the camp, we had a warm welcome reception with some traditional Moroccan tea and cookies in the cosy common area with authentic decoration (seriously, it was like being on a movie set).

After relaxing a bit we were shown to our tent suite and we were surprised how cool the tents actually were. The big tent was equipped with toilet, shower, a big comfortable bed and heat for cold nights. Decoration was full of unique pieces and locally crafted artwork, forming a harmonious whole with their surroundings. Set against an elegant and simple backdrop, the natural materials, African woven matting and Berber rugs, interesting pieces brought back from travels abroad and atmospheric Moroccan lanterns, give the impression of being on an expedition from another time.

Without any electricity, the tent was lit by lanterns and during the night we could see an endless numbers of bright stars in the sky, it was a breath-taking experience.

At Scarabeo you are able to taste delicious traditional Moroccan food with freshly baked bread from the small earthen oven and freshly produced seasonal vegetables cooked to perfection to bring out the natural flavours. Sometimes it is like I can still taste the delicious food hear the bling-bling of the wines glasses toasting for a beautiful night at the camp.

If you are looking for some extra adventures in the desert, Scarabeo Camp offers a lot of activities, for example “off-the-beaten-track”-tour by quad or bike, guided dune buggy tour, relaxing massage at the camp, camel-back or donkey-back ride, horse-riding for experienced riders, half/full day trekking with a mountain guide with picnic at a picturesque spot, day trip in a 4×4 to discover the region, stargazing with an astronomy professor or yoga classes.

Even without all these activities, I highly recommend you to experience Scarabeo Camp. You will enjoy slow relaxing days, beautiful nights, have a feeling of being in another world and leave full of energy. The staff at the camp is extremely friendly and happy to help you with everything you need, so the stay is certain to become unforgettable.

Thanks Scarabeo for the most beautiful moments in the desert! You are definitely the BEST!
