There is weight in Uma Wang’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection, but very little heaviness.
Wang begins with sculpture and then unsettles it. Form is made to move; volume is allowed to breathe. The clothes have substance, yet refuse the expected discipline of substantial clothes. A tailored jacket trails into silk. A skirt and trousers merge into a single, slightly improbable silhouette. Draped cotton: dense, almost architectural, is cut against a chiffon trench so light it seems to register only as air.
It is a collection built on suspension.
The reference to Alexander Calder is less literal than elemental. His mobiles understood that mass could be made to float, that balance could be more dynamic than symmetry. Uma Wang applies a similar logic to dress. Nothing quite lands where expected. Fabric hangs, twists, folds back on itself. Gravity is present, but negotiable.
The tactile contrasts are deliberate. Dry cotton against liquid viscose. Textured jacquard against transparency. Softness beside structure. Dense surfaces that seem almost mineral, then suddenly fluid. These are clothes with a physicality you can imagine before you see them: garments that ask to be touched, handled, disturbed.
There is also continuity here. Elements from the previous collection return, but stripped of their former formality. Wang is not interested in repetition; she is interested in evolution. Tailoring loosens. Elegance becomes less ceremonial, more instinctive. The clothes look as though they have been lived in before they have even been worn.
And wearing them is part of the design.
Trousers are knotted, fastened, opened. Pieces are wrapped and left undone. A garment shifts position; a fastening becomes a gesture; a proportion changes with the movement of the body. The silhouette is never entirely prescribed.
That distinction matters.
Wang treats styling not as the final polish of a look, but as an act of construction. The garment arrives unfinished on purpose. The wearer completes it, or disrupts it. What might elsewhere be considered imperfection becomes the point: a loosened tie, an uneven fall, fabric slipping away from the architecture intended for it.
Spontaneity is not the opposite of precision here. It is the method.
The effect is quietly radical. There is no theatrical insistence on transformation, no need for the clothes to announce their intelligence. Instead, Wang lets tension accumulate between opposites: tailored and undone, monumental and weightless, controlled and accidental.
